SHIPPING AND PACKAGING

Shipping painting / 2d artwork

Whether your artwork is framed or unframed, proper packaging is essential to ensure it arrives safely and undamaged. Here's what you need and how to do it:

Materials You Will Need:
- Scissors
- Tape
- Glassine or tissue paper
- Wrapping paper
- Cardboard
- Optional: corner protectors
- Foam or plywood boards
- Cushioning material (e.g., bubble wrap, paper, styrofoam)
- Shipping label

Step-by-step Instructions for Packing a Framed or Unframed Painting or Artwork:

1. Handling the Artwork:
Always wear cotton gloves when touching the artwork to prevent damage from skin oils, which can harm the frame and painted surface.

2. Covering the Surface:
Protect the painted side and the frame by covering them with glassine or soft tissue paper. Fold the paper neatly around the frame and secure it gently with tape — make sure no tape touches the artwork or the frame itself.

3. Protecting the Edges:
Use corner protectors to shield the edges of the frame from knocks or pressure.

4. Basic Support:
Place the wrapped painting onto a foam board or firm piece of cardboard and fix it with tape. Then wrap the whole piece in packing paper to guard against dirt and scratches.
⚠️ Important: Always use breathable materials to prevent moisture buildup, which can cause long-term damage to the artwork.

5. Shock Absorption:
For short-distance transport, bubble wrap can be used. For added safety, opt for corrugated cardboard (which allows airflow).
For optimal protection, sandwich the artwork between foam, styrofoam, or plywood panels and tape everything securely.

6. Into the Shipping Box:
Place the padded artwork into a strong cardboard box. Fill all empty spaces with soft packing materials to prevent shifting during transit.

7. Final Touches:
Seal the box securely and attach the shipping label. Don’t forget to clearly mark the package with a "Fragile" or "Handle with Care" notice.

Shipping Framed Artworks with Glass

Glass-covered artworks require extra care to prevent damage to both the frame and the artwork itself.

Materials You Will Need:
- Painter’s tape or glass safety tape
- Foam or cardboard corner protectors
- Glassine or tissue paper
- Bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard
- Sturdy cardboard box or shipping crate
- Cushioning material (foam, paper, air cushions)

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Secure the glass:
Apply painter’s tape in a cross or grid pattern on the glass surface. This helps hold the glass together if it breaks during transport.

2. Wrap the artwork:
Cover both the front (glass side) and back with glassine or tissue paper. Add corner protectors for the frame.

3. Wrap with bubble wrap:
Wrap the entire frame in multiple layers of bubble wrap, making sure the bubbles face outward to avoid leaving marks on the glass.

4. Boxing the artwork:
Place the wrapped frame in a cardboard box with at least 5 cm (2 inches) of space around it. Fill all empty spaces with padding so the frame stays fixed in place.

5. Label clearly:
Seal the box securely and mark it with “Fragile,” “Glass – Handle with Care,” and “This Side Up.”

Shipping Sculptures and 3D Artworks

Shipping sculptures and other three-dimensional artworks requires special care to ensure they arrive safely and undamaged.

You will need:
- Soft gloves (cotton)
- Bubble wrap or foam sheets
- Packing paper
- Cardboard or custom-sized box
- Filling material (e.g., foam chips, crumpled paper, air cushions)
- Strong tape and labels

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Clean and inspect the piece:
Make sure the sculpture is clean and dry before packing. Remove any detachable parts and wrap them separately.

2. Wrap carefully:
Wrap the entire sculpture in soft packing paper to prevent scratches. Then wrap it in several layers of bubble wrap or foam, ensuring all surfaces are well padded.
Important: If using bubble wrap, the bubbles should face outward to avoid pressure marks on delicate surfaces.

3. Add extra padding for fragile areas:
Protect delicate parts like extended arms, thin elements, or corners with extra foam or soft material.

4. Place in a box:
Choose a strong cardboard box or a wooden crate that allows at least 5 cm (2 inches) of space around the artwork. Fill the space with packing material so that the sculpture doesn’t move during transport.

5. Label the box:
Seal the box well and clearly label it with “Fragile,” “Handle with Care,” and “This Side Up.”
