Whether your artwork is framed or unframed, proper packaging is essential to ensure it arrives safely and undamaged. Here's what you need and how to do it:
Materials You Will Need:
- Scissors
- Tape
- Glassine or tissue paper
- Wrapping paper
- Cardboard
- Optional: corner protectors
- Foam or plywood boards
- Cushioning material (e.g., bubble wrap, paper, styrofoam)
- Shipping label
Step-by-step Instructions for Packing a Framed or Unframed Painting or Artwork:
1. Handling the Artwork:
Always wear cotton gloves when touching the artwork to prevent damage from skin oils, which can harm the frame and painted surface.
2. Covering the Surface:
Protect the painted side and the frame by covering them with glassine or soft tissue paper. Fold the paper neatly around the frame and secure it gently with tape — make sure no tape touches the artwork or the frame itself.
3. Protecting the Edges:
Use corner protectors to shield the edges of the frame from knocks or pressure.
4. Basic Support:
Place the wrapped painting onto a foam board or firm piece of cardboard and fix it with tape. Then wrap the whole piece in packing paper to guard against dirt and scratches.
⚠️ Important: Always use breathable materials to prevent moisture buildup, which can cause long-term damage to the artwork.
5. Shock Absorption:
For short-distance transport, bubble wrap can be used. For added safety, opt for corrugated cardboard (which allows airflow).
For optimal protection, sandwich the artwork between foam, styrofoam, or plywood panels and tape everything securely.
6. Into the Shipping Box:
Place the padded artwork into a strong cardboard box. Fill all empty spaces with soft packing materials to prevent shifting during transit.
7. Final Touches:
Seal the box securely and attach the shipping label. Don’t forget to clearly mark the package with a "Fragile" or "Handle with Care" notice.
